John Calipari has a way with coaching young players. As I sit here awaiting my Kentucky Wildcats to take on Notre Dame to see who advances to the 2015 Final Four, I have noticed what separates the Cats from other teams.
Yes, this year has been an exceptional year for the Wildcats as far as skill level, especially amongst the freshmen players. But I believe what separates John Calipari’s players from other teams is his ability to turn these young, vulnerable boys into young, classy men. His style of coaching allows these young players to ‘buy’ into a program that uses basketball as a means to teach them life skills, not just basketball skills. I honestly believe that Calipari is just as concerned with how these boys turn out ‘after’ basketball as he is with winning a national championship.
So, Coach Cal, my hat’s off to you for truly caring about these young men and not just being a selfish coach looking to amplify your own accomplishments. Win or lose tonight, you have accomplished the biggest win of all with these players and that is how to win and conduct themselves in life.
Good luck Coach Cal and the University of Kentucky Wildcats!
