Today I tried to have an intelligent discussion with my mother-in-law about the movie The Passion of the Christ. It didn’t go so well as I imagined it wouldn’t.
I told her that I watched the movie with my two kids, ages 9 and 10 and that they had so many questions pertaining to Jesus Christ, why people hated Him so much to beat Him so badly and hang Him on the cross. Although I had seen the movie quite a few times before, my children weren’t old enough to possibly grasp the scope of this movie, nor old enough to have an intelligent discussion about the subject matter.
I told my mother-in-law, who hadn’t seen the movie, about the discussion we had when Jesus was being beaten and had the ‘crown of thorns’ pushed down into his head. She instantly let me know that the movie was not age appropriate for them and even went further to say that she didn’t want to see the graphic details of Jesus’ life.
I was literally quite perplexed by her comments. After all, my children had never before been so inquisitive about the life of Jesus until they were able to visualize the circumstances of His life. Yes they go to church, yes they go to Bible school, Sunday school, but never before had anything prompted this type of discussion.
So I informed my mother-in-law respectfully that in fact this movie was age appropriate and it answered questions that even I have a hard time answering. It let them know more about the life of their Maker.
So, what do you think…..is the movie The Passion of the Christ an important and age appropriate movie for 9-10 year olds? I am interested in your thoughts.
May God be with you all……
